CAF Champions League: Tense night in Rabat as AS FAR and Al Ahly share the spoils
The clash between Morocco’s ASFAR and Egypt’s Al Ahly in Rabat ended in a fiery 1-1 draw, capping one of the most heated nights of this CAF Champions League group stage.
In a charged atmosphere at Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, tempers flared several times, with the referee forced to stop the game after cancelling a goal for the home side, which sparked a confrontation between players and brought security personnel onto the pitch.
Ahly players also complained of sharp objects and empty bottles being thrown from the stands, adding tension to an already explosive contest. Despite missing several key names, the Egyptian champions emerged with a valuable point that keeps them top of Group B with four points, ahead of Young Africans on goal difference, while ASFAR collected their first point of the campaign.
The hosts went ahead from a penalty rebound finished by Mohssine Bourika, after Mostafa Shobeir had initially saved Mohamed Rabie Hriemat’s effort. Ahly responded after the break, piling on pressure until substitute Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane whipped in a cross that Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet buried with a powerful header.
