Ousmane Diao and FC Midtjylland’s perfect Europa League run ends with narrow defeat in Rome
FC Midtjylland’s flawless Europa League campaign came to a halt on Thursday as AS Roma claimed a 2–1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico, handing Ousmane Diao and his teammates their first setback of the group stage.
The Danish side arrived in Rome with four consecutive wins and full confidence, but the evening quickly turned against them.
Roma, battling in the middle of the group standings, struck early through a superb volley from Neil El Aynaoui in the seventh minute, seizing control before Midtjylland could settle into their rhythm.
Despite trailing, Mike Tullberg’s side attempted to impose their usual structure and tempo, yet their efforts were repeatedly frustrated by a Roma team determined to revive their European push.
Midtjylland, who had already stumbled domestically in their previous outing against SønderjyskE, struggled to find their usual fluidity in possession.
As the match progressed, Midtjylland pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Roma’s defensive organisation held firm.
The hosts then delivered what proved to be the decisive blow late in the match.
Stephan El Shaarawy capitalised in the 83rd minute, striking Roma’s second goal and strengthening their grasp on the contest.
Even then, Midtjylland refused to capitulate. Paulinho reduced the deficit three minutes later, giving the visitors a lifeline and setting up a tense finale.
But the late surge came too late to overturn the scoreline, and Roma saw out the remaining moments to secure a victory that tightens the race at the top of the group.

For Diao and his teammates, the defeat marks not only their first dropped points in the Europa League this season but also a reminder of the fine margins that define European competition.
The result allows Aston Villa to close the gap after their own win over Young Boys, ensuring the fight for qualification remains wide open.
Despite the setback, Midtjylland retain their position at the top of the group and remain in a strong position to advance.
Their task now will be to respond with authority, rediscovering the efficiency and discipline that carried them through their opening four European matches.
