French-Guinean midfielder Paul Pogba backed for World Cup return

Monaco defender Jordan Teze believes Paul Pogba can fight his way back into France’s squad before next summer’s World Cup, insisting the midfielder’s qualities remain intact despite his long absence from elite competition.

The French-Guinean star made his long-awaited Monaco debut in Saturday’s defeat at Rennes, ending more than two years without competitive football following injuries and a doping suspension.

His return has sparked debate about whether he can still reach international level, but Teze is confident the 2018 world champion has the tools to make it happen.

Teze told L’Equipe that Pogba continues to radiate enthusiasm and drive, noting his age should not be a barrier.

He described a player who still brings energy and influence, even while working toward full match sharpness.

Teze said the midfielder remains “young” in football terms and demonstrated that spirit immediately after returning to regular training.

“Paul is 32, but he exudes happiness, freshness, and desire. He’s still young.”

Asked about fellow summer arrival Ansu Fati, Teze continued:  “At first, I was more impressed by him, because Paul wasn’t yet in his stride.

“But now you can see that Paul is back to being Paul. He’s not at his best yet, but with the consistency in his matches… (he can make the World Cup squad)”

With the World Cup less than a year away, Pogba’s path back to the top remains demanding.
