'I'm 36 but still feeling great' – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired up for more after brace in Marseille win over Newcastle

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang declared that he feels as sharp as ever at 36 after leading Marseille to a crucial 2-1 Champions League victory over Newcastle on Tuesday.

The veteran striker struck twice at the Stade Velodrome, driving his side to a comeback win that keeps their qualification hopes alive and underscoring his continued value at the highest level of European competition.

Speaking after the match, Aubameyang said the night’s performance reflected his enduring motivation and hunger to compete at elite level.

He noted that the team had overcome a slow start and emphasised the importance of delivering meaningful results at home.

He also underlined the significance of victories at this stage of the group campaign, particularly for a club with strong expectations from its fanbase.

“I’m very happy to be here at this club to enjoy moments like tonight. It was a great game. We started a bit sloppily, but we reacted well,” he said.

“I’m feeling great, even if I’m 36. When you play these types of games, you want to play more and score more.

“It was very important, especially at home and for the fans. If we want to go through, then we have to win games.”

Newcastle started with authority and stunned the home crowd after only six minutes when Harvey Barnes finished a swift move with a precise strike.

The early goal allowed Eddie Howe’s team to settle, and they controlled much of the first half with measured passing and disciplined defensive organisation.

Marseille struggled to find rhythm in the opening exchanges, frequently losing possession in midfield and failing to create clear openings against Newcastle’s compact shape.

The match changed after the interval, however, as Marseille displayed greater intensity and pushed their full-backs higher to stretch the visiting defence.

Aubameyang became increasingly influential, dropping deeper to link play and drifting between the centre-backs with clever movement.

His equaliser arrived shortly after the restart when he reacted quickest inside the box, guiding a low effort beyond the goalkeeper. The goal lifted the home supporters and shifted momentum entirely in Marseille’s favour.

Four minutes later, Aubameyang completed the turnaround with a composed finish that highlighted his enduring instincts in front of goal.

The striker peeled away from his marker to meet a driven cross, steering the ball past the keeper with confidence.

Newcastle attempted to respond but struggled to regain control, as Marseille’s midfield pressed aggressively and protected their narrow lead with determination.

The win keeps Marseille firmly in the chase for a knockout berth.
