I am open for a new adventure – Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro

Former Orlando Pirates manager Jose Riveiro says he is open to stepping into international football, describing the prospect of leading a national team as an increasingly appealing next chapter in his career.

The Spaniard, who recently left Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly, remains without a club but carries a resume shaped by steady progress across Europe — from youth development at Celta Vigo to senior roles in Spain and Finland.

His reputation grew significantly in South Africa, where he guided the Buccaneers to five domestic cup titles.

Speaking to Metro FM, the 50-year-old admitted the idea of coaching a national side has become more intriguing, especially with the evolving responsibilities attached to the role.

“Well, obviously [coaching a national team] it’s something very attractive if you have the opportunity to be part of a national team which is having the opportunity or chances to go to the final stage of AFCON or European Cup or World Cup, it’s always going to be attractive for a coach,” Riveiro said.

“But then it’s also about the coach, the way you want to approach your role in a national team. I think probably right now that role is also changing, depending on the federation as well.”

Riveiro noted that federations now expect their head coaches to contribute to long-term planning and technical direction, rather than focus solely on first-team matters.

“You get different duties and you must be also part of somehow the football development in that country, not only taking care of the first national team. I’m telling you this because I was part of that process as well for a national team not a long time ago.
