Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the best player in the history of Gabonese football, says head coach Thierry Mouyouma
Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma has labelled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the greatest footballer of all time the country has ever produced.
This comes ahead of their 2026 World Cup playoff against the Super Eagles of Nigeria tonight in Morocco.
The former Chelsea and Arsenal star was a key player in Gabon’s World Cup qualifying campaign after bagging seven goals in five matches.
Ahead of the game, Mouyouma was full of praise for the veteran striker, who will have a big role to play against the Super Eagles.
“Pierre-Emerick is 36, but I feel like he’s getting better with age,” Mouyouma told Afrik Foot.
“He’s been one of the best African players for over ten years. He came back to Marseille after a season in Saudi Arabia, and he’s performing well.
“With the national team, it’s not just his goals that stand out. His attitude is excellent.
“He’s a competitor, and when I met with him after my appointment to convince him to come back, I also emphasised the leadership role he would play.
“He’s the best player in the history of Gabonese football. He’s a key figure; he lifts the team,” he added.
The winner of the tie will come up against either DR Congo or Cameroon in the final on Sunday.
