“No room for error” – Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong ahead of crucial Gabon clash

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has urged his teammates to stay focused ahead of their all-important 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.

The West African football heavyweights missed out on automatic World Cup qualification, and are set to participate in a playoff to determine their fate for the tournament to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The playoff structure sees Nigeria face Gabon on November 13 at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat, while Cameroon takes on DR Congo. The winners will compete on November 16 for a spot in the intercontinental playoffs.

Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to a silver medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, stressed that the team must be flawless in Morocco to triumph in the mini-tournament.

“We’ve built great chemistry, and the mindset in camp is positive… Although preparation time is short, we’re focused,” he told Olympics.com.

“It’s a one-off game on neutral ground, and we know we must win to reach the final playoff. There’s no room for error”

The defender praised the spirit in camp, noting that the Super Eagles are motivated by their goal of returning to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Troost-Ekong has acknowledged the threat posed by Gabon’s captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been in fine form with seven goals in the qualifiers.

“Gabon is a strong team… I’ve played against Aubameyang in Saudi Arabia, and I know what he brings. In Africa, you can’t underestimate any team, and we certainly won’t do that with Gabon,” he said.
