U17 World Cup: South Africa secure second place despite defeat to Italy
South Africa concluded their Group A campaign at the U17 World Cup with a 3-1 defeat to Italy on Sunday, but still advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in the standings.
The match took place at Pitch 9 of the Aspire Zone in Al-Rayyan.
Italy began the encounter with intensity, immediately putting pressure on the South African defence.
Their early dominance paid off in the fourth minute, when Samuele Inácio struck the opener to give the Europeans a quick lead.
Despite the early setback, South Africa gradually settled into rhythm and began to create opportunities of their own.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 32nd minute, when Shaun Els found the equaliser to bring the teams level before halftime.
The second half saw Italy reassert control. Just ten minutes after the restart, Antonio Arena restored Italy’s advantage with a clinical finish in the 55th minute.
South Africa barely had time to regroup before Inácio added his second of the match three minutes later, extending Italy’s lead to 3-1 and effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.
From there, Italy managed the game with composure, maintaining possession and limiting South Africa’s attacking chances.
The young Azzurrini’s structured approach and efficiency in front of goal proved decisive, as they finished the group stage with a perfect record of three wins from three matches.
For South Africa, the defeat did little to overshadow what has been an encouraging campaign so far.
With four points from their three matches, the team secured second place in Group A, comfortably advancing to the next round.
Their spirited performances, including a key win and a draw earlier in the tournament, demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline against strong opposition.
Elsewhere in the group, Qatar and Bolivia played to a draw in their final fixture, leaving them in third and fourth place respectively and ending their hopes of qualification.
Italy’s dominant group-stage performance sends a clear signal of intent heading into the knockout phase, while South Africa will look to regroup and build on their strong foundation as the tournament intensifies in Doha.
