'Stop the criticism, protect him' - Spanish-Moroccan wonderkid Lamine Yamal backed by agent Mendes

Agent Jorge Mendes has hit back at critics of Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, insisting the youngster deserves protection rather than judgment from pundits and fans.

The super-agent said the 18-year-old forward has shown remarkable professionalism despite intense scrutiny surrounding his rising fame and off-field activities.

Yamal, who has Moroccan heritage through his father, has emerged as one of Spain’s brightest footballing prospects.

His blend of flair, maturity, and consistency has drawn praise worldwide but also sparked debates in Spain about his lifestyle and exposure at such a young age.

Mendes, however, dismissed the growing noise around the Barcelona star. “I don’t understand all this fuss about Lamine Yamal,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

Mendes described Yamal as a level-headed player focused on his development and fully aware of his responsibilities.

“He knows exactly what he has to do, both on and off the pitch. He works quietly, says little, and learns every day,” Mendes said.

“He’s a very intelligent and focused boy. Remaining humble and working hard is crucial to his growth.”

The Portuguese agent also praised Yamal’s on-field brilliance, describing him as a natural performer destined for greatness.

“His greatest strength is letting his game do the talking. Every match delivers a masterpiece, as we saw against Club Brugge. Only players destined for the top level can do so with such ease,” he added.

Mendes warned against comparing Yamal to past football greats such as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, saying those parallels create unnecessary pressure.

“Lamine is unique and shouldn’t be compared to anyone,” he said. “If he continues on this path, he could become the best player of the next two decades, not just for four or five years.”
