Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has declared he would not trade striker Danny Welbeck for any other player globally, praising both his ability and character.

The England international, who has Ghanaian heritage through his father, has scored six goals and provided one assist in 12 appearances this season, quickly becoming a central figure under Hurzeler.

“I think I wouldn’t swap Danny for any player in the world,” Hurzeler said, emphasising that Welbeck’s value goes beyond statistics.

“Of course the media always try to reward him for the goal and that is very important. But I try to judge him on his personality. How important he is for us as a player, as a person.”

The Brighton manager highlighted Welbeck’s leadership and influence in the dressing room.

“He is a great connector off the pitch. He is a great leader off the pitch. He is a great role model. That is why we are very pleased he is here, and I think he is in outstanding shape. So, to answer your question, no, I wouldn’t change.”

With World Cup qualifiers approaching, Thomas Tuchel is expected to include Welbeck in England’s squad for games against Serbia and Albania later this month.

Reports suggest the 34-year-old forward could play behind Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, forming a potent striking partnership for England on the global stage.

This comes as Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins struggles for form, scoring only once in 14 matches so far, increasing the likelihood of Welbeck starting in a pivotal attacking role.

Welbeck’s combination of experience, versatility, and leadership has made him indispensable at Brighton, with Hurzeler’s glowing remarks underscoring the striker’s importance both on and off the pitch.

His continued form at the club level will be vital for England’s ambitions, especially as the national team prepares for key qualifiers ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
