2025 FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup: South Africa coach Vela Khumalo delighted after resilient win over Bolivia

Head coach of South Africa’s Amajimbos, Vela Khumalo, has expressed his delight following South Africa’s impressive 3-1 victory over Bolivia in their opening Group A match at the ongoing 2025 FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup in Qatar.

Despite playing much of the match with ten men after Sive Pama was sent off, the young South Africans delivered a spirited performance to secure all three points.

Emile Witbooi, Neo Bohloko, and Shaun Els found the back of the net to propel South Africa to the top of the group standings, ahead of Italy, who edged tournament hosts Qatar 1-0 in the other fixture.

Reflecting on the game, Khumalo commended his players for their determination and tactical discipline under pressure.

“It’s the World Cup, the biggest stage ever, and nothing is more important than this,” Khumalo said.

The coach added, “You cannot take this stage for granted. We are learning, but it’s a good learning curve. Starting the game with one man down made things even tougher, but it’s a valuable experience for the players. I’m very happy with the result and how we adapted tactically after the red card.”

Up next for South Africa, they will take host nation Qatar on Thursday, November 6, in their second group match at the tournament.
