Helsingborg IF forward Adam Akimey chooses Benin over Sweden

Helsingborg IF forward Adam Akimey has decided to represent the Benin national team at the expense of Sweden.

The 21-year-old, who recently joined Helsingborg IF is expected to add firepower to Benin’ attack. Akimey, a former Swedish youth international has been impressive, scoring five goals and providing two assists in the Superettan.

Akimey agreed to join the national team following several conversation with head coach Gernot Rohr. The decision represents a significant step in his international career.

Benin is gradually becoming a strong force on the African continent considering their recent performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Squirrels missed out on qualification on final day after succumbing to a humiliating defeat to Nigeria.

With Akimey choosing Benin over Sweden at the international level, the Squirrels will be a force to reckon on the continent.

Having come through the ranks at Hammarby IF, the fast-rising attacker has scored over fifteen goals to date.

Currently playing in Superettan, the Swedish second division, Adam Akimey has been selected for the friendly match against Burkina Faso, scheduled for November 18, 2025.

He is due to arrive in Cotonou on November 10 to prepare with his new teammates and make his first appearance in the colors of Benin.
