Unfazed Xabi Alonso sidesteps media storm over Brazilian-Cameroonian star Vinicius Junior

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso maintained composure as journalists repeatedly pressed him for answers about Vinicius Junior’s conduct ahead of Saturday’s La Liga clash with Valencia.

The coach faced a barrage of questions about the forward’s behaviour following his emotional reaction to being substituted during last weekend’s El Clásico victory over Barcelona.

Xabi, however, avoided confrontation, insisting the matter had been resolved internally and expressing satisfaction with the player’s apology.

Vinicius, who was born in Brazil to a family of Cameroonian descent, apologised both publicly and privately after his touchline outburst.

His statement, however, drew attention for omitting any mention of Xabi, prompting speculation of tension between the two.

Still, the coach downplayed the omission and reiterated that the incident was behind them.

“We had a meeting with everyone on Wednesday, and Vinicius was impeccable,” Xabi said.

“He spoke sincerely, from the heart, and was very good. For me, that settles the matter.” When asked about being left out of the player’s apology, Xabi replied calmly,

“It was a very valuable, very positive statement. He demonstrated his honesty; he spoke from the heart. What he said was the most important thing.”

The Real Madrid boss repeatedly steered the discussion back to football matters, emphasising focus on the upcoming match.

“I understand you, but please understand me,” he told reporters. “It was finalised on Wednesday. What worries me is Valencia.”

Xabi confirmed that no disciplinary action would be taken against Vinicius, highlighting the player’s strong mentality and commitment during training.

“No, no retaliation,” he stated when asked about punishment.

The coach praised the team’s performance in the Clásico, calling it an important morale boost. Yet he cautioned against complacency ahead of the Valencia game.

“After a big win, sometimes you let your guard down a bit,” he said. “We have to stay sharp and focused.”

Calm, diplomatic, and deliberate, Xabi Alonso appeared determined to prevent the Vinicius saga from overshadowing Real Madrid’s momentum.
