Portuguese-Cape Verdean legend Nani urges Ronaldo and Rooney to publicly back Man United revival
Manchester United legend Nani has called on Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to show public support for the club’s resurgence under manager Ruben Amorim.
Born in Amadora, Portugal, to Cape Verdean parents, Nani believes that visible backing from United’s biggest icons could inspire both players and fans during what he describes as a “crucial rebuilding phase.”
The former winger said United’s revival depends not only on Amorim’s tactical work but also on collective belief, particularly from figures who helped define the club’s modern era.
The appeal follows a turbulent 2024/25 season when the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to progress in Europe.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney continue to be very important figures for Man Utd. They still inspire players at the club and the club needs the support at the moment,” Nani told reporters.
“Having players like those two in the future will be very difficult, but it’s great whenever they are asked about the club and they give their advice and their support.”
The 37-year-old, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, believes Amorim has already restored discipline and clarity to a side that lost its identity in recent years.
Nani’s comments reflect a growing sense of optimism around Old Trafford, with the team improving in both intensity and style.
“We all need to encourage the players, the manager and the fans to continue to believe we can turn everything around and be the club everyone used to see in the past,” he added.
United have started the new campaign with renewed energy, blending academy talents with experienced signings as they attempt to re-establish themselves among England’s elite.
