Several prominent coaches are reportedly in contention for the vacant Zimbabwe national team head coach position, with former Kaizer Chiefs boss Stuart Baxter emerging as one of the frontrunners.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is on the hunt for a new manager following the dismissal of German tactician Michael Nees, who was relieved of his duties after failing to guide the Warriors to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nees’ tenure lasted 15 months, having taken charge of the national side in July 2024, but a disappointing qualifying campaign brought an abrupt end to his stint.

In the search for his successor, Baxter, who has previously coached Bafana Bafana and most recently managed Portuguese side Boavista FC before leaving in June, is said to be among the leading candidates.

Another name strongly linked with the job is South Africa’s highly respected coach Pitso Mosimane, who remains unattached after parting ways with Iranian club Esteghlal FC earlier this year.

Mosimane’s pedigree and experience across African football have made him a fan favourite to take charge of the Warriors as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Locally, Tonderai Ndiraya, who currently manages Scottland FC in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League and has previously worked with national stars Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona, is also among those under consideration.

Meanwhile, interim coach Kaitano Tembo is believed to be in strong contention to retain the role permanently, with his familiarity with the current squad considered a major advantage.

Speaking to Herald Online, ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that the selection process is already underway and that an announcement will be made shortly.

“We have a committee that is currently working to develop a roadmap, defining the specifications and profile of the coach we want,” Magwizi said. “We need clarity on the type of manager we’re seeking, and this will be finalised within the next three days.”

With several high-profile names in the mix, all eyes will be on ZIFA to see who is entrusted with leading Zimbabwe’s next chapter on the continental stage.
