Petrojet holds Al Ahly to a draw in the Egyptian Premier League
Al Ahly had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Petrojet in their Egyptian Premier League clash Wednesday at the Military College Stadium in Cairo.
Petrojet took the lead in the 11th minute through Palestinian player Hamed Hamdan, who headed home a cross after a mistake by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. Al Ahly responded in the 61st minute as substitute Nejc Gradisar netted the equalizer, finishing off a header set up by Mohamed Hany and Ben Ramadan.
This marks Al Ahly’s first draw in four matches under new Danish coach Jess Thorup, who previously led wins against Eagle Noir and Ittihad Alexandria. Al Ahly now sits second in the league table on 22 points, one behind leaders Ceramica Cleopatra, while Petrojet climbs to 15 points in twelfth place under manager Sayed Eid.
The match was characterized by physical battles and a flurry of yellow cards, with both teams creating opportunities throughout. Petrojet’s defense denied several Al Ahly attacks, including a close-range miss by Trezeguet and a header from Taher Mohamed Taher. Gradisar nearly won it late with multiple efforts, but was unable to beat Petrojet keeper Omar Salah.
The league’s twelfth round concludes Thursday with Zamalek facing Bank Al Ahly at Cairo Stadium. Al Ahly looks to regroup ahead of upcoming fixtures and restore their winning momentum.
