Saint-Eloi Lupopo’s CAF Champions League hopes hang in the balance after Orlando Pirates protest
Saint-Eloi Lupopo’s participation in the group stage of the CAF Champions League is now clouded in uncertainty.
After an intense qualification campaign that saw them edge past South African side Orlando Pirates, attention quickly turned to controversies off the pitch.
Lupopo managed a tough performance in both legs, progressing thanks in part to an eventful second match where their player, Dieumerci Moukoko, drew headlines for his controversial on-field behaviour. His actions during the decisive leg sparked debates among fans and analysts, contributing to an already heated atmosphere.
However, any celebrations have been dampened by fresh off-field drama. It was officially confirmed that head coach Guy Bokassa is banned from being present on the bench during CAF competitions. This disciplinary action traces back to sanctions levied against him after the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Orlando Pirates, unhappy with Lupopo’s coach officially participating despite the ban, promptly submitted an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
With CAF now reviewing the matter, Saint-Eloi Lupopo’s hard-earned place in the group stage is under threat, leaving players and supporters anxiously awaiting a final verdict on their Champions League future.
