Dayot Upamecano’s Bayern Munich future in limbo as contract talks stall
Dayot Upamecano’s future at Bayern Munich has become the talk of football circles with contract extension talks at a standstill.
Although the French center-back’s current deal runs until 2026, both Upamecano and Bayern’s leadership want clarity on his status before committing for the long term. Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl aims to keep Upamecano until 2030 or 2031, signaling belief in his importance for club stability.
However, negotiations have hit three major snags: Upamecano’s camp is asking for a big salary bump above the €15 million he currently earns, a sizable signing bonus in the double-digit millions, and the option of a release clause—something Bayern’s board isn’t willing to grant. These issues have reportedly stalled progress on the extension.
Coach Vincent Kompany, who was recently extended until 2029, is a key factor. Under Kompany’s leadership, Upamecano has revived his form and is seen as a defensive anchor, starting 10 out of 12 matches this season.
Bayern’s hopes for defensive continuity hinge on resolving the impasse, with both club and player poised for an important decision in the coming months.
