Algeria: Badreddine Bouanani seeks to rekindle his spark with Stuttgart amid national team frustration

Badreddine Bouanani will have the chance to make a strong statement to Algeria coach Vladimir Petković when VfB Stuttgart face Fenerbahçe in the Europa League tonight.

After being overlooked during the national team’s recent fixtures, the 21-year-old forward knows this European encounter presents the perfect platform to reaffirm his value.

The technically gifted winger, who began to establish himself at Stuttgart this season, endured a frustrating international break.

Despite joining Algeria for their World Cup qualifying matches against Somalia and Uganda, Bouanani remained on the bench throughout both games, sharing only in his teammates’ celebrations of qualification.

His omission left him disappointed, but also determined to prove his worth on the pitch back in Germany.

That opportunity arrives in Istanbul, where Stuttgart will play their first-ever competitive match against Turkish opposition at the fervent Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

Bouanani is expected to start in what promises to be a challenging atmosphere — the kind of high-pressure setting that could allow him to showcase his composure and creativity.

History appears to favour Stuttgart, as Fenerbahçe have managed just one victory in 13 European matches against German clubs — a 4-2 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach during the 2012–13 Europa League campaign.

The Turkish side began their current group campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb before edging Nice 2-1 at home.

Stuttgart, meanwhile, sit level on three points after a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo followed by a 2-0 defeat away to Basel.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Stuttgart will come up against a familiar face in Fenerbahçe’s new manager, Domenico Tedesco, who took charge in September following José Mourinho’s departure.

The 40-year-old previously worked within Stuttgart’s youth academy between 2008 and 2015, making this clash a reunion of sorts.

Bouanani’s domestic form remains modest — he played only 12 minutes in last weekend’s 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Wolfsburg — but his European record is far more promising, with two starts and a goal already to his name in this season’s competition.

Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness continues to show faith in the young Algerian, having pushed for his €15 million signing from Nice in the closing days of the summer transfer window.

“He’s a player with enormous potential, and we want to help him grow,” Hoeness recently said.

For Bouanani, tonight’s match represents more than a club fixture.

It is a chance to prove he belongs among Algeria’s core players ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Time may not be on his side, but his performances in Europe could yet shift the narrative — both in Stuttgart and with the national team.
