Chelsea join transfer race for Portuguese-Cape Verdean defender Nuno Tavares
Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Portuguese-Cape Verdean full-back Nuno Tavares from Lazio next year, amid interest from AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.
The 25-year-old defender, who traces his roots to Cape Verde, has revitalised his career in Italy following a difficult spell with Arsenal.
After an impressive season on loan, Lazio made his move permanent last summer, and he has since become one of their most consistent performers in Serie A.
According to Il Messaggero, relayed by La Lazio Siamo Noi, Chelsea are monitoring Tavares closely as they plan defensive reinforcements for next season.
The Blues view the left-back position as an area to strengthen despite already signing Jorrel Hato from Ajax, who currently serves as Marc Cucurella’s understudy.
Tavares’s attacking output has caught attention across Europe.
The Lisbon-born full-back has provided nine assists in 36 appearances for Lazio and remains a key figure under manager Igor Tudor.
His blend of pace, creativity and defensive maturity has reignited interest from several elite clubs.
Lazio are expected to demand around €50 million for Tavares, a valuation inflated by Arsenal’s 40 per cent sell-on clause.
However, potential buyers believe the final fee could be negotiated lower due to his salary structure.
Chelsea, meanwhile, face stiff competition from Italy’s top three—AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus—each viewing Tavares as a long-term solution in defence.
While the Blues already boast depth at left-back, the club’s recruitment team reportedly see Tavares as a versatile option who can adapt to multiple systems.
Having endured mixed spells at Arsenal and Marseille, Tavares has rebuilt his reputation in Rome.
With his form attracting growing attention, the next transfer window could determine whether he remains a Serie A star or makes a Premier League return under new colours.
