Senegalese forwards Bamba Dieng and Sambou Soumano rescue Lorient in six-goal derby thriller
Lorient battled back to earn a 3-3 draw against Brest on Sunday, with Senegalese forwards Bamba Dieng and Sambou Soumano playing decisive roles in an entertaining Brittany derby on matchday eight of Ligue 1.
The hosts made the perfect start at the Stade du Moustoir, striking early through Le Bris to take a 1-0 lead.
However, Brest responded strongly, turning the match around before half-time in dramatic fashion.
Junior Dina Ebimbe brought the visitors level before a stroke of misfortune saw Lorient’s Jean-Victor Makengo deflect the ball into his own net, giving Brest a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The opening period was lively, marked by relentless attacking play from both sides.
Brest, buoyed by their late first-half surge, appeared to have the upper hand as they controlled the tempo and threatened to extend their lead.
Lorient, though, came out with renewed determination in the second half.
The introduction of Bamba Dieng and Sambou Soumano changed the course of the game.
Their energy and understanding added pace and unpredictability to the home side’s attack, keeping the Brest defence constantly on alert.
The Merlus’ persistence was rewarded when they managed to level the score, reigniting the contest and setting up a tense final stretch.
But Brest reclaimed the lead midway through the second half when Del Castillo converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2, seemingly restoring order for the visitors.
Just when Brest thought victory was within reach, Lorient found another response.
In the closing stages, Dieng produced a clever assist to set up his compatriot Soumano, who displayed great composure to beat the Brest defence and fire home the equaliser.
The goal sealed a thrilling 3-3 result and ensured both Senegalese forwards left their mark on the derby.
The result does little to improve either team’s standing in the league table, but the performance highlighted Lorient’s fighting spirit and their ability to recover from difficult situations.
For Brest, it was a case of missed opportunity after twice leading and failing to hold on for the win.
In the end, the draw was a fair outcome from a gripping contest that delivered drama, goals, and quality attacking football from both sides.
Dieng’s creativity and Soumano’s finishing proved crucial in ensuring Lorient avoided defeat in front of their home crowd.
