Winning 16 straight matches not easy – Nayef Aguerd reacts to Morocco’s historic run
Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd has opened up about the Atlas Lions’ historic run of 16 consecutive wins.
During the October international break, Morocco became the first national team ever to record 16 straight victories, surpassing the previous record of 15 held jointly by Spain (2008) and Germany (2014), both of whom went on to win the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at a press conference monitored by Africasoccer, the Marseille and Morocco centre-back expressed pride in the team’s consistency and drive ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted on home soil.
“It wasn’t easy – even with the quality of our squad and the infrastructure we have in Morocco, 16 straight wins is difficult,” Aguerd admitted. “I’m proud of the coach; he’s given so much to Moroccan football. We have a young group with a lot of talent. It’s a record, and hopefully we can go for a 17th win.”
Looking ahead to AFCON 2025, Aguerd acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with playing at home.
“The AFCON is at home, and we can’t afford to make mistakes. It’s a positive kind of pressure – I hope the trophy stays in Morocco,” he added.
