South African midfielder Keagan Buchanan announces retirement at 34
South African midfielder Keagan Buchanan has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
Buchanan, who began his career in the youth ranks of Ajax Cape Town before moving to Old Mutual Academy and later SuperSport United, made his professional debut with Winners Park.
He went on to play for FC Cape Town and rose to prominence during his spell with Bloemfontein Celtic.
His impressive performances earned him a move to Kaizer Chiefs, followed by stints at Maritzburg United and AmaZulu. In the latter stages of his career, he featured for Cape Town Spurs before deciding to hang up his boots.
In a post announcing his retirement on social media, Buchanan expressed appreciation to everyone who played a role in his career.
“From an 8-year-old kid at Ajax with a dream, to living that dream on pitches across the country — I can only be grateful.
“Football has given me everything: memories, lessons, friendships, and moments I’ll carry for life.
“As this chapter closes, I give all glory to God for every step, every setback, and every comeback,” Buchanan said.
He continued, “Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey — teammates, coaches, fans, family, and friends.
“This game shaped me. But most importantly, it prepared me for what’s next.”
Following his retirement, Buchanan has transitioned into football administration, taking up an administrative role with Western Cape-based ABC Motsepe League side Hope FC.
