Senegal booked their place at the 2026 World Cup after an emphatic 4-0 win over Mauritania in Diamniadio on Tuesday, inspired by a superb performance from Sadio Mané.

The Al-Nassr star struck twice to lead the Lions of Teranga to another major tournament, while DR Congo claimed a play-off spot and Burkina Faso suffered elimination.

Playing at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, Senegal began cautiously but gradually imposed their dominance.

After several missed opportunities, including a blocked effort from Iliman Ndiaye, the breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half-time.

Mané, who had faced criticism in recent months, silenced his detractors with a brilliant curling free-kick to open the scoring.

Barely three minutes into the second half, the 32-year-old doubled Senegal’s advantage, converting calmly from Krépin Diatta’s cross.

Ndiaye then made it 3-0 with a fine individual run before substitute Habib Diallo rounded off the win in the 84th minute.

The result confirmed Senegal as unbeaten group leaders and secured their place in North America.

Elsewhere, DR Congo did just enough to reach the play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Sudan in Kinshasa.

Theo Bongonda fired home the decisive goal in the 29th minute, a low shot under the bar that sealed the Leopards’ second-place finish and a berth among the best runners-up.

Despite their efforts, Burkina Faso’s campaign came to a disappointing end as they were overtaken by the Congolese and knocked out of contention.

Sébastien Desabre’s men will now join Nigeria, Cameroon, and Gabon in the play-offs, where they will battle for a spot at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

As celebrations erupted in Diamniadio, Senegal’s display served as a reminder of their status among Africa’s elite — driven once again by the brilliance of Mané, whose leadership and clinical finishing ensured his nation’s return to the global stage.
