‘The f**** system has to go’ – Anthony Elanga rages after Sweden’s shock loss to Kosovo
Swedish winger Anthony Elanga was left furious following Sweden’s 1-0 home defeat to Kosovo in Monday’s World Cup qualifier — a result that leaves their hopes of reaching the 2026 finals hanging by a thread.
Born to Cameroonian parents, the Newcastle United star started on the bench and was visibly frustrated after the final whistle at the Ullevi Stadium.
Radiosporten reporter Jonas Enarson overheard Elanga venting his anger in the players’ tunnel, shouting: “The f***** system has to go.”*
Speaking later to reporters, Elanga struck a more measured tone but made his disappointment clear.
“We also have to take responsibility. We have worked on a system, on how we are going to play,” he said.
“Then it may look a little different when you are on the field. And it is also us who are on the field who have to take responsibility.”
He admitted frustration at being left out of the starting lineup, adding, “It’s frustrating. As a footballer, you always want to play. I was completely healthy.
“I’m disappointed, that’s clear. I feel refreshed, but you have to respect that (not being picked).”
Sweden’s defeat to Kosovo was their third in four qualifying matches, leaving them bottom of Group B with just one point.
Fisnik Asllani’s first-half strike secured a famous win for the visitors, who have now completed a double over the Swedes after also beating them 2-0 in Pristina last month.
The loss piles further pressure on head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, whose side have struggled for both cohesion and cutting edge.
Despite dominating possession, Sweden were blunt in attack, with Alexander Isak missing two late chances as Kosovo’s goalkeeper Arijanet Muric pulled off a crucial save to preserve the win.
