Senegalese striker Ousmane Sow rises from Navétane roots to Polish top flight

Ousmane Sow’s journey from Kaolack’s sandy Navétane fields to Poland’s top division reflects pure determination and ambition.

At 24, the Senegalese striker now shines for Górnik Zabrze and dreams of representing his homeland, Senegal.

His story began in Kaolack, where he played for Boustane during the Navétane tournaments.

His early promise caught the attention of key figures like Pape Faye, Samba Sow, Fodé Coulibaly, and Assane Dieng, who became vital mentors in his rise.

Encouraged by their support, Sow left for US Gorée, marking his first step toward professional football.

A turning point came when he met Adama Ndiaye, founder of the Dakar Sporting Centre.

Ndiaye became instrumental in Sow’s path to Europe, arranging trials with Auxerre, Saint-Étienne, Paris FC, and Tours.

Though these opportunities didn’t lead to contracts, they gave Sow valuable experience and strengthened his resolve to succeed.

In 2020, his European breakthrough arrived at Arles-Avignon in France’s sixth division. Sow quickly established himself as the club’s top scorer, setting the stage for a move to Furiani in Corsica and later to Olympique Charleroi in Belgium.

His standout performances earned him a place at Lierse SK, where he impressed with goals, assists, and consistency in Belgium’s second tier.

By February 2025, Sow took another leap, joining Górnik Zabrze in Poland’s top division. Initially hesitant about the move, a discussion with his agent convinced him of the club’s strong vision.

Since then, Sow has adapted well, featuring regularly and aiming to finish the season with more goals while securing a lasting spot in the team.

In just four years, Sow has climbed from France’s sixth tier to Poland’s elite league.

His progress and commitment have earned admiration across the football community.

Despite his growing success, Sow’s ultimate dream remains to represent Senegal at the international level.

He believes his performances in Poland can open that door. “The national team has always been a dream,” he said. “I’ll keep working hard to make it happen.”
