2026 WCQ: Marc Brys snaps at reporters over his future after Cameroon’s draw with Angola

Cameroon coach Marc Brys reacted angrily when questioned about his future following the Indomitable Lions’ goalless draw with Angola in their final 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Monday in Yaoundé.

The stalemate leaves Cameroon facing the prospect of going through the play-offs to secure their place at the World Cup, and the Belgian-born coach did not hide his frustration during the post-match press conference.

When asked whether he intended to continue in charge of the national team after the disappointing result, Brys sharply replied: I’m the one who decides whether I should leave or stay. Not you. He went on to add: I’m here to perform, not to wage war.

The remark hinted at the ongoing tension between the coach and the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), led by Samuel Eto’o, though Brys did not directly mention the governing body.

Defensive but defiant
The 63-year-old tactician, who has faced mounting criticism in recent months, reminded the press of his previous achievements, defending his record at the helm.

We qualified for the African Cup of Nations very quickly. People forget that. Although we didn’t lose more than one match, we were unable to win a match like this. That’s football. I have no reason to hide.

Brys’ tone reflected growing frustration over the scrutiny surrounding his leadership, especially after being praised only months earlier for guiding Cameroon comfortably through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Hint of internal discord
The coach also appeared to take aim at members of Fecafoot, accusing certain officials of interference that, in his view, has disrupted the team’s preparations.

If the coordinator does his job, I don’t bother him, but if he does something against us, of course I have to react, Brys said. Not qualify directly? There are reasons for that. When you’re stuck in prison on the plane… They’re footballers, not machines.

His comments have reignited speculation about divisions between the national team’s technical staff and the federation, an issue that has lingered throughout his tenure.

Fan unrest grows
Meanwhile, discontent among supporters continues to grow.

In a video released by RSI, echoes of the frustration that led to the dismissal of former coach Toni Conceição after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations could be heard, with some fans calling for Brys to step down.

As the dust settles on a tense night in Yaoundé, the Ministry of Sports — which officially employs the coach — will now have to decide whether to back Brys or bow to public pressure demanding change.
