Alphonso Davies confident as cruciate ligament recovery progresses
Alphonso Davies has shared an encouraging update on his recovery from a serious knee injury that has sidelined him for more than six months.
The Bayern Munich and Canada international tore his cruciate ligament in late March during a Nations League clash against the United States, and he continues to work towards full fitness at the club’s Säbener Strasse training complex.
Speaking to fcbayern.com, the 24-year-old left-back said he feels increasingly confident about his progress. “I’m running and training well. I just need a little more muscle mass in my right leg,” he said. “When the doctors told me how long the recovery would take, I thought, ‘Oh dear, this is going to be a long one.’ But now, everything is fine.”
Davies admitted that while his physical condition has improved steadily, managing the mental side of his rehabilitation has been more demanding. “The process is harder mentally than physically,” he explained. “The muscles recover on their own. But not knowing how long you’ll be out, or if you’ll be able to do certain things again, it’s difficult.”
Known for his blistering pace and explosive energy on the pitch, the Canadian star has had to learn patience during his recovery. “Sometimes the body says, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ Then you have to be mentally strong. That’s the only way to get there. If you don’t do it yourself, no one else will,” he said.
Since early September, Davies has resumed light ball work and continues individual training sessions under the supervision of Bayern’s medical team. Although no official date has been set for his full return, the defender says he is determined to approach the final phase of his recovery carefully. “These kinds of injuries are part of the sport. The only thing I can do now is fight to come back. Not as quickly, but as carefully as possible.”
Bayern Munich are currently contending with several injury concerns, including Jamal Musiala, who is nursing an ankle problem, and Hiroki Ito, sidelined with a metatarsal injury. Three long-term absentees, including Davies, are undergoing rehabilitation together at the club’s facilities.
“We see each other every day and try to motivate each other,” Davies added. “Being surrounded by good people is an asset.”
Despite his absence, Davies’ positive outlook and commitment to a full recovery reflect his determination to return to peak form — both for Bayern Munich and the Canadian national team.
