Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has described Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe as one of South Africa’s most important matches in over two decades, warning that failure to win could end their 2026 qualification hopes.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Durban on Thursday, Broos said South Africa must claim maximum points at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to stay in contention before their final Group C fixture against Rwanda next Tuesday in Mbombela.

Bafana are level on 14 points with Benin but trail on goal difference, while Zimbabwe sit bottom with four points.

“I think this game is one of the most important matches in the past 24 or 25 years,” Broos said.

“By getting a victory, we have a big chance to qualify, and with a defeat, we can stop dreaming.”

The Belgian tactician dismissed suggestions that the already-eliminated Warriors would make things easier for South Africa, insisting that Zimbabwe remain motivated opponents.

“They are very motivated when I read what they say, and we don’t expect favours from them. But we don’t need their favours — we want to do it correctly and we believe in it,” he stressed.

Broos praised his squad’s focus and spirit during training, expressing confidence in their ability to rise to the occasion.

“The boys are very motivated and they know the importance of this game. We are confident that we can do the job,” he added.

With Bafana set to face Zimbabwe again in the Africa Cup of Nations Group B in December, Broos emphasised that his side approaches every match with a winning mentality.

“Every game we start, we want to win. That is the mentality we have in the team,” he said.

Striker Lyle Foster is expected to lead the line for South Africa as they push for victory in front of a home crowd.

Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, meanwhile, said his team viewed the qualifier as crucial preparation for the upcoming AFCON.

“We are not taking this game lightly. It’s a good opportunity for us, starting with Bafana Bafana and Lesotho,” he stated.
