French-Cameroonian star Kylian Mbappé confident of breaking Giroud’s all-time France scoring record
Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappé has expressed confidence that he will soon become his country’s all-time top scorer, saying it is only a matter of time before he surpasses Olivier Giroud’s record.
Born to a Cameroonian father and Algerian mother, the striker has been in prolific form for Les Bleus, rewriting goal-scoring records at a remarkable pace.
The 26-year-old recently drew level with Thierry Henry’s international tally after netting a superb solo goal in France’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Ukraine.
That strike brought Mbappé’s total to 52 goals in 92 appearances — placing him just five behind Giroud, who holds the current record of 57 goals in 137 matches before his retirement from international football.
Speaking to journalists ahead of France’s next qualifier, the Real Madrid star admitted that while breaking Giroud’s record is inevitable, he does not feel any pressure about when it will happen.
“I think I’ll beat (Giroud), but when, I don’t know. Maybe tomorrow, who knows? Maybe later. It’s something that will come naturally and I’ll move on from there,” Mbappé told reporters.
He added that his focus remains on helping France win matches rather than chasing individual milestones: “I’m not breaking any taboos when I say I can score goals against anyone.
“Every match has its own reality. The stakes are higher than just scoring goals, even if we’re not going to deprive ourselves of that.”
Mbappé’s consistency and goal-scoring instincts have already positioned him among France’s greatest-ever players.
With five goals separating him from history, it now seems inevitable that the Real Madrid forward will surpass Giroud’s mark before his 27th birthday later this year — cementing his place at the top of France’s scoring charts.
