The meteoric rise of Kobbie Mainoo: From Manchester United's midfield to England's national squad

Napoli are reportedly preparing to make a move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window as the Serie A club continue their recruitment of out-of-favour Old Trafford players.

Mainoo, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, has struggled for playing time under Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and has featured sparingly this season.

he 20-year-old has attracted interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but Napoli are emerging as serious contenders for his signature.

According to Sky Sports Switzerland, Napoli have initiated contact with the player’s representatives and are considering a loan approach when the window reopens in January.

The Italian club are reportedly keen to “continue his progression in a competitive environment,” with manager Antonio Conte viewing Mainoo as an ideal addition to bolster their title challenge.

Napoli’s interest in Mainoo follows their recent success with other Manchester United players.

The club currently have Rasmus Højlund on loan and also boast former United midfielder Scott McTominay, who helped them lift the Serie A title last season.

Mainoo has managed only 200 minutes of football this campaign, making four substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Reports indicate the teenager could request a transfer if his situation does not improve in the coming weeks.

For Napoli, Mainoo represents both a developmental project and a statement signing, as Conte seeks to blend youthful energy with experience in his midfield.

A switch to Serie A could offer Mainoo the regular first-team exposure he has struggled to find in Manchester, reigniting his progress after a difficult spell under Amorim.
