Guinea defeats Mauritania to lead Group B in U17 AFCON qualifiers

Guinea opened their U17 AFCON qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Mauritania in Bamako, securing first place in Group B ahead of Senegal.

The match, played at the Ouezzin Coulibaly Stadium on Monday, saw the Syli National U17 side dominate possession and create several chances but struggle to break down Mauritania’s strong defensive block.

Guinea wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first half when they missed a penalty, leaving the game goalless at the break despite their attacking superiority.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 53rd minute when Mohamed Zayatte Sylla found the net with a composed finish. His decisive strike gave Guinea a crucial three points in their opening fixture.

Sylla’s overall performance impressed both fans and officials. Tournament organisers named the young striker man of the match after his energetic display and match-winning contribution.

Mauritania’s defenders worked tirelessly to contain Guinea’s attack, but their resistance broke shortly after the restart. The goal shifted momentum and allowed Guinea to control the remaining minutes with greater confidence.

The win places Guinea at the top of Group B with three points, while Senegal and Sierra Leone share second place after their 1-1 draw in the group’s other opening game.

Coach Sékouba Camara praised his team’s resilience, especially after the missed penalty in the first half. He emphasised the importance of maintaining focus as the competition intensifies.

Guinea will now prepare for their next group match against Senegal on Thursday. The highly anticipated clash could prove decisive in shaping qualification from Group B.

Victory against Senegal would give Guinea a strong advantage in the race for a semi-final spot. However, Camara’s players know that Senegal, a traditional powerhouse at youth level, will provide a far sterner challenge.

The Syli National youngsters aim to continue their momentum, with Sylla expected to play a pivotal role once again. His ability to convert chances may prove vital in a tightly contested group.

Mauritania, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before facing Sierra Leone. A defeat in their second match would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

The tournament, hosted in Mali, brings together the best U17 sides from the West African zone, with teams competing for a place in the continental finals.

Guinea’s victory demonstrates their intent to go deep into the competition and possibly secure one of the coveted qualification spots. Their disciplined display, combined with individual brilliance, has already set them apart in Group B.

As the second round of matches approaches, Group B remains finely balanced. Guinea hold the advantage, but Senegal and Sierra Leone will look to respond, ensuring that the coming fixtures provide more drama.
