Zimbabwe’s assistant coach, Takesure Chiragwi, has resigned from his position just days ahead of the Warriors’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, following a controversial incident in the domestic league.

Chiragwi drew widespread criticism after slapping Ngezi Platinum star McDonald Makuwe during Saturday’s Premier Soccer League clash against Dynamos FC, an altercation that was captured live on television.

Reports indicate the incident occurred in the 32nd minute after Dynamos scored an equaliser. Chiragwi, visibly angered by the referee’s decision, reportedly lashed out at Makuwe when the player attempted to calm him down.

In a public statement, Chiragwi expressed regret over his actions.

“I wish to sincerely and unreservedly apologise for my regrettable conduct during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos FC at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday, 4 October 2025,” read part of the statement, as per NewsDay Zimbabwe.

“My actions on the touchline, which were broadcast live, were wholly inappropriate and unbecoming of a coach, leader, and representative of our game.

“First and foremost, I extend my deepest apologies to McDonald Makuwe, the player involved. I am deeply sorry for my behaviour towards you… Regardless of the circumstances or emotions of the moment, there is no justification for my actions.”

Chiragwi’s resignation comes as a significant blow to Zimbabwe, with the Warriors scheduled to face Bafana Bafana on Friday, 10 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in a pivotal World Cup qualifying match before taking on Lesotho in the final group game.

He had been serving as first assistant coach under Michael Nees.
