Missing out on 2025 AFCON was tough for us - Ghana defender Alidu Seidu

Ghana defender Alidu Seidu has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to bounce back stronger following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Reflecting on the team’s recent setbacks, the Rennes centre-back said the disappointment has only deepened the players’ hunger to return Ghanaian football to its rightful heights.

“Missing AFCON wasn’t a disappointment for Ghanaians but even for the players,” Seidu said in an interview with Flashscore.com.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in progress, Seidu is determined to play a key role in Ghana’s campaign as the team looks to secure its place at the global tournament.

The 23-year-old’s own story is one of perseverance. After recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that kept him out for several months, Seidu has returned to form with the French side Rennes and is now focused on contributing both at club and national level.

Ghana currently sits in a favourable position in the World Cup qualifiers, needing just four points from their final two matches to book a ticket to the tournament.

“We must qualify for the World Cup,” Seidu emphasised, reflecting the determination and pride of being part of a big football nation like Ghana. With his sights set on helping Ghana succeed, Seidu’s comeback is a boost to both Rennes and the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, Alidu has been named in Ghana’s squad for the final round of games against Central African Republic and Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
