DR Congo: Yoane Wissa’s injury blow delays return for club and country
Yoane Wissa’s much-anticipated comeback has been pushed back, with the Congolese international now ruled out until November 2025 following a fresh setback in his recovery from a knee injury.
Newcastle-based journalist Keith Downie reported that the striker, who was on the verge of making his debut for his new club, has suffered complications that extend his initial recovery time from four to five weeks to a minimum of eight.
This delay means Wissa, a key figure for the Democratic Republic of Congo, will miss a critical stretch of matches at both club and international level.
Already sidelined during the September international break, the forward will remain absent for at least five of Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures across the Premier League, domestic cup and Champions League.
His earliest possible return is now targeted for the clash against West Ham on 2 November 2025.
According to Downie, Wissa underwent a consultation with a medical specialist earlier this week, and the results confirmed the need to postpone his return to competitive action.
The news is a significant blow for supporters, who were eager to see the Leopard in Newcastle colours after his summer move.
The delay also complicates preparations for the Democratic Republic of Congo as they gear up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Wissa, one of the national team’s most influential attacking players, will be absent for the upcoming qualifiers, leaving coach Sébastien Desabre without one of his principal weapons.
Wissa’s absence deprives Newcastle of a versatile forward capable of changing the tempo of a match, while the DRC must now recalibrate their offensive plans ahead of a vital period in their campaign.
Fans of both club and country will be hoping his extended rest period allows him to return fully fit and ready to deliver at the highest level when November arrives.
For now, patience will be required as Wissa works to complete his rehabilitation — a frustrating wait for the player and his growing fan base, who must bide their time before seeing him back in competitive action.
