Achraf Hakimi’s Ballon d’Or prospects divide opinion among former internationals

Achraf Hakimi has brushed aside suggestions of disappointment after finishing sixth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings, insisting he is simply honoured to be recognised among the world’s best.

The Moroccan right-back, who emerged as the highest-ranked defender on the list, said he sees the accolade as a source of pride rather than a snub.

“It’s not a disappointment for me. I’m happy to be among the 30 best players in the world. You, the journalists, ranked me as the 6th best player in the world. That’s something I never thought I would be,” Hakimi told reporters ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash.

He added: “My priority is team trophies; it’s you who talk about the individual awards. I’m proud of this sixth place and I want to keep working hard to, who knows, climb even higher in the rankings.”

His comments came amid debate over whether he deserved a higher placing, given his key role in PSG’s Champions League triumph, Morocco’s strong international displays, and his inclusion in multiple teams of the year.

Hakimi quickly backed up his words on the pitch, delivering a standout performance in PSG’s 2–1 win over Barcelona. The defender was a constant threat down the right flank and provided the decisive cross for Gonçalo Ramos’ late winner. Defensively, he also produced a crucial block to deny Dani Olmo and helped neutralise Barcelona’s wide threats.

The performance underlined Hakimi’s value to PSG and reinforced his point that his legacy will be defined by team achievements rather than individual accolades.
