Adem Zorgane battles through setback as Algeria recall looms

Adem Zorgane endured a difficult night as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise were swept aside 4-0 at home by Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, just two weeks after their historic 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the opening round of the League phase.

Despite the heavy defeat, the Algerian midfielder stood out against the Premier League side, making his 12th appearance in all competitions this season.

Zorgane has clocked more minutes on European pitches than perhaps any other Algerian player this term.

Since the start of the campaign, he has already amassed 926 minutes of competitive football.

A full-fledged starter for Union Saint-Gilloise – the club he joined this summer – the 24-year-old again earned a place in the starting XI for Wednesday’s encounter with the Magpies.

In the duels, he delivered a robust display, winning five of his eight challenges against some of the most physical players in European football.

His quick integration at the Belgian side has been seamless.

Under the guidance of coach Sébastien Pocognoli, Zorgane has become a vital cog in a team that currently leads the Jupiler Pro League with 23 points from a possible 27.

Such consistency has not only strengthened his position at club level but also revived his chances of reclaiming a spot in the national team.

The midfielder, capped 20 times by Algeria, was surprisingly omitted from Vladimir Petkovic’s squad for the September training camp, despite also missing out in June without clear explanation.

The Greens’ midfield struggled during those gatherings, lacking stability outside of Hicham Boudaoui’s contributions.

Now, as October’s international break approaches, Zorgane’s form makes him a serious candidate for a recall.

That possibility has been heightened by Houssem Aouar’s likely absence.

The Al Ittihad midfielder is sidelined with a muscular issue and has struggled to impress during his recent appearances for the national team.

Aouar’s dip in form could open the door for Zorgane to return to the fold, offering Petkovic a reliable option in the centre of the park.

For Zorgane, the timing could not be better. While Union Saint-Gilloise lick their wounds from the Newcastle defeat, their Algerian star has emerged as one of the side’s most consistent performers – and perhaps, once again, a key figure for the Greens.
