2025 FIFA U20 World Cup: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffer 1-0 defeat to Norway in opening group game
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria opened their campaign at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile with a 1-0 defeat to Norway on Monday, September 29.
The game began with early drama as Kparobo Arierhi rattled the crossbar inside three minutes, but Norway struck first when VAR adjudged Daniel Bameyi to have handled in the box. Rasmus Holten converted the resulting penalty in the 9th minute to hand the Europeans the lead.
Nigeria responded with attacking intent. Israel Ayuma tested goalkeeper Einar Fauskanger, while Tahir Maigana came close with a low strike. Despite dominating possession, the Flying Eagles struggled to unlock Norway’s compact defence, who also threatened through Gustav Nyheim.
The second half saw Nigeria push harder for an equaliser. Arierhi’s shot was blocked, and Maigana was left frustrated again when his thunderous strike hit the post in the 63rd minute.
Substitutes Sani Suleiman and Charles Agada injected energy into the attack, with Agada nearly scoring in stoppage time before being denied by Fauskanger.
VAR controversies deepened Nigeria’s frustration as two late penalty appeals were turned down. Despite 11 minutes of added time and relentless pressure, the Flying Eagles could not find the breakthrough.
The defeat leaves Nigeria at the bottom of the Group F table, with crucial fixtures ahead.
Up next for the Flying Eagles, they will take on Saudi Arabia in their next group game on Thursday, October 2.
