Sporting CP: Ousmane Diomandé and Geny Catamo returns to training
Sporting Portugal have received a timely lift ahead of their upcoming league fixture, with Ousmane Diomandé and Geny Catamo both resuming training after injury lay-offs.
Ivorian defender Diomandé has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines since suffering a muscle injury at the start of the season.
The 21-year-old featured in Sporting’s opening league game but has not appeared since, missing six matches between 8 August and 22 September.
His recovery comes as a major boost for head coach Rúben Amorim, who regains a key figure in the heart of defence.
Diomandé’s absence has been keenly felt, with Sporting forced to reshuffle their back line in recent weeks.
His return to full training now raises hopes that he could be available for selection as the club push to maintain their strong start to the campaign.
Catamo back sooner
Mozambique international Catamo has also returned to the squad after his own muscle problem, though his absence proved shorter.
The winger had been a regular starter until the September international break, when he picked up the injury while away on duty.
The 24-year-old subsequently missed four matches for Sporting but is back in training ahead of the weekend’s clash with Estoril.
His availability provides Amorim with additional attacking options, though his involvement in the match remains uncertain and will depend on how he responds during the final sessions this week.
Selection decisions ahead
While both players have been cleared to rejoin the group, Sporting’s medical staff are expected to monitor their progress closely.
A cautious approach is likely, given the nature of their injuries and the need to avoid setbacks in what will be a demanding season across multiple competitions.
For Sporting supporters, however, the sight of Diomandé and Catamo returning to the training pitch represents welcome progress.
Their presence strengthens both the defensive and attacking units at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Sporting face Estoril on Saturday in the Portuguese league, and while their immediate return to action is not guaranteed, the reintegration of Diomandé and Catamo offers renewed optimism for the weeks ahead.
