Abidjan-born Marc Guehi back in conversation for January move to Liverpool after Leoni setback
Liverpool’s January transfer window plans could be reshaped after Giovanni Leoni’s injury blow, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi back on the radar at Anfield.
The England international was a major target for the Reds in the summer before Palace blocked a late move, but the situation could change following Leoni’s cruciate ligament setback.
Guehi, born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, before moving to England as a child, has been a mainstay at Crystal Palace since joining from Chelsea in 2021 and is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.
Liverpool had earmarked him as part of a long-term rebuild at centre-back but decided to wait until the end of the season after completing the signing of 18-year-old Leoni.
That plan may now be under review. Leoni’s injury could sideline him for several months, raising doubts about Arne Slot’s depth in central defence as Liverpool aim to fight on all fronts.
The club had viewed the January window as a period to consolidate rather than recruit, but Guehi’s availability may prompt a rethink.
Palace, however, remain reluctant to lose one of their key players mid-season. The 25-year-old himself is said to be prioritising stability ahead of a World Cup year but remains open to a Liverpool move if the timing is right.
For now, Liverpool are waiting on a full medical update on Leoni before making a definitive decision. But if his recovery drags on, the recruitment team may accelerate plans to strengthen, with Guehi still at the top of their shortlist.
