'I just tucked it away' - Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak hails Chiesa after first Liverpool goal

Alexander Isak has opened his Liverpool account but was quick to shift the spotlight to teammate Federico Chiesa after scoring in the Reds’ 2-0 EFL Cup win over Southampton at Anfield.

The 26-year-old forward netted midway through the first half to seal his first strike since arriving on transfer deadline day, yet insisted it was Chiesa’s relentless pressing that made the goal possible.

Born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, Isak became Liverpool’s headline summer signing and has been carefully integrated into Arne Slot’s team since the start of the season.

Tuesday’s goal marked only his second start and third appearance for the club as he continues to build fitness after a shortened pre-season.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Isak underlined the standards required at Anfield.

“I think especially when you play for a club like Liverpool, you’ve got to compete on all fronts. That’s the main goal: to be competitive in all competitions, going out to every game wanting to win,” he said.

“All of the work was really done by Fede, a high-pressure regain and from that moment I was trying to be in the right place, which I was and I just tucked it away.”

Isak also discussed his ongoing conditioning as Liverpool prepare for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.

“Obviously my situation was a bit special so I had to do some extra work, which is completely normal. I’m happy to do any work that will get me in better shape. It’s good. I’m working hard to be in my best shape and then it’s up to the coach.”

His goal and improved sharpness offer a timely boost for Slot as Liverpool aim to maintain momentum across all competitions.
