WAFU B U17 AFCON Qualifiers: Ivory Coast thump Ghana 3-0 to extend lead in Group A
Ivory Coast’s U17 national team delivered a dominant display on Tuesday evening, defeating Ghana 3-0 in the ongoing WAFU B U17 Championship.
The competition, hosted in Ivory Coast, doubles as qualifiers for the next edition of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana’s Black Starlets had opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Togo and came into this clash needing a win to boost their chances of progressing. However, the young Ivorians proved too strong, overwhelming their opponents with pace, precision, and resilience.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Robinho Gavi Yao, who calmly slotted home after breaking through Ghana’s defence. Despite efforts to fight back, the Starlets failed to find an equaliser before halftime.
The second half saw Ivory Coast turn on the style, adding two more goals to seal an emphatic 3-0 triumph at Stade Konan Banny. The victory keeps the Ivorians firmly at the top of Group A with six points from two matches.
For Ghana, the heavy defeat leaves their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. The Black Starlets must now defeat Niger in their final group fixture to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
