French-Cameroonian striker Hugo Ekitiké explains why Liverpool was “the right time and place”
Hugo Ekitiké made a decisive move in his career during the last summer transfer window, opting to leave Eintracht Frankfurt after a standout season and join Liverpool in the Premier League.
The French-Cameroonian forward, only 23 years old, chose Anfield as the next stage in his development, despite attracting strong interest from other clubs.
Before committing to the Reds, Ekitiké had several options available. Newcastle United were among the sides particularly keen to secure his services, with his name frequently linked throughout the English transfer window.
His eventual decision to head to Merseyside, however, was shaped by conviction rather than convenience.
Speaking on Canal Football Club, the striker detailed the factors behind his choice. “Why Liverpool instead of Newcastle? It was my choice, it’s what I wanted,” Ekitiké said. “Because I had more of a feeling coming here, and I knew it was the right time and the right place for me.
I wanted to get back to the top level and return better equipped, more ready in all aspects. And I don’t think I made a mistake.”
Ekitiké’s impact has been immediate. Since the beginning of the season, he has contributed four goals and one assist in just seven appearances across all competitions, quickly establishing himself as a valuable addition to Jürgen Klopp’s side.
His performances have already drawn praise from teammates, with defender Joël Matip describing him as a player who “has everything he needs to succeed at Liverpool.”
The striker’s commitment is reflected in the length and value of his contract. Ekitiké is tied to Liverpool until June 2031, earning an annual salary of €12,062,448,s.
His current market valuation is estimated at €75 million, according to Transfermarkt, underlining his growing stature in European football.
Ekitiké’s journey to Liverpool also marks a significant chapter in a career that has already taken him through Paris Saint-Germain and Germany’s Bundesliga.
His decision to choose Liverpool over Newcastle was not merely a sporting one but an affirmation of his belief that Anfield offered the right environment to refine his game and showcase his potential on the biggest stage.
With his early performances justifying the faith placed in him, the French-Cameroonian forward appears determined to cement his place among Liverpool’s leading figures in the years ahead. For both the player and the club, the move is beginning to look like the right decision at the right time.
