Danish-Nigerian forward Chido Obi shines as Man Utd U21 fight back to beat Liverpool

Manchester United’s U21 side maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Liverpool, and it was 17-year-old striker Chido Obi who stole the spotlight.

The young Red Devils had to come from behind at Kirkby in what was billed as their toughest test yet but showed grit and quality to extend their 100% record.

Obi, who is of Nigerian heritage, has been spending time with the U21s this term as manager Ruben Amorim looks to balance his senior-team workload.

The teenager has used the opportunity to refine his game in a more competitive youth environment, where his physical edge is less pronounced but his all-round development is accelerating.

Against Liverpool, United’s youngsters initially found themselves struggling for rhythm. Diego Leon had difficulty influencing play, and Shea Lacey often ran into crowded spaces on the flanks.

Yet, as he has done with the senior side, Obi produced a decisive moment when it mattered. After neat interplay between Lacey and Tyler Fletcher, the forward latched onto the ball from a tight angle and coolly slotted past the Liverpool goalkeeper to draw his side level.

That strike turned the momentum firmly in United’s favour. Obi continued to occupy defenders with clever runs, winning duels and creating space for teammates as Amorim watched on.

The comeback was completed later in the game, sealing another vital win for the academy side.

While goals will naturally define a striker’s reputation, this display underlined how much Obi’s game is maturing.
