Congolese international Gael Kakuta double sinks Amedspor
Amedspor’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Sunday as they fell 2-1 away to Sakaryaspor in the sixth round of the Turkish second division, despite another goal from in-form striker Mbaye Diagne.
The visitors arrived with confidence after recovering well from their opening-day defeat to Çorum and had been steadily climbing the table.
Their optimism seemed justified when Diagne, who has been prolific since the start of the campaign, struck early to notch his fifth league goal of the season.
The Senegalese forward showcased his sharp finishing once again, underlining his importance as Amedspor’s attacking leader.
But the advantage proved short-lived. Sakaryaspor, determined to reassert themselves after recent setbacks, quickly wrestled control of the contest.
Congolese international Gael Kakuta provided the inspiration, equalising to bring the hosts back into the game.
His composure and creativity unsettled the Amedspor defence, which until then had looked organised and compact.
Kakuta struck again later in the match, completing his brace and turning the tie decisively in Sakaryaspor’s favour. His clinical display highlighted the difference between the two sides on the day: Amedspor were efficient in flashes, but lacked the consistency to contain a player of his experience and quality.
Amedspor pressed in the closing stages, looking for a route back into the contest, but Sakaryaspor held firm.
The defeat halts Amedspor’s momentum, keeping them in seventh place on the table, three points adrift of leaders Erokspor.
For Diagne, the goal adds to an impressive individual tally, consolidating his reputation as one of the division’s most dangerous strikers.
However, his efforts were not enough to rescue his side from their second loss of the campaign.
Coach Serhat Sutlu will be left frustrated that his team could not build on their promising start, especially after Diagne’s opener appeared to set the tone.
Instead, Amedspor were undone by lapses that a player of Kakuta’s calibre was quick to exploit.
With the season still in its early stages, Amedspor remain within striking distance of the promotion places.
But Sunday’s defeat serves as a reminder that maintaining consistency against experienced opponents will be key to their ambitions.
Sakaryaspor, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their resilience and Kakuta’s match-winning display, which reignites their own push towards the top of the table.
