Al Fateh drop Moroccan international Amine Sbaï for Cameroonian forward Karl Toko-Ekambi

Al Fateh have formally removed Moroccan international Amine Sbaï from their first-team squad, clearing a foreign player slot to register Cameroonian forward Karl Toko-Ekambi.

The decision, finalised last Thursday, confirms weeks of speculation that Sbaï no longer featured in coach José Gomes’ plans.

Sbaï, 26, joined the Saudi Pro League with ambition but struggled to make an impact in his debut season.

Competition on the left flank, particularly from Argentinian Cristian Vargas, limited his opportunities, and his playing time dwindled sharply in the latter half of the campaign.

The club’s management have now acted decisively, prioritising the arrival of the more experienced Toko-Ekambi, who brings with him a wealth of European pedigree from spells at Lyon, Villarreal and Rennes.

According to report’s, Gomes personally requested that Sbaï be moved on during the summer transfer window, either on loan or through a permanent sale.

The Moroccan’s exclusion now leaves him in limbo, with negotiations reportedly underway with potential suitors.

His market value is estimated at €750,000, making him an affordable option for clubs across the Gulf, Eastern Europe or his homeland’s Botola Pro, where a return could offer a smoother path to revival.

Sbaï’s career trajectory had promised much.

A product of Nîmes Olympique’s youth system, he made his professional breakthrough with Olympique d’Alès in 2019 before emerging as top scorer in France’s National 2 the following season.

Moves to FC Sète and later Grenoble Foot 38 in Ligue 2 showcased his technical ability, versatility and eye for goal.

That progress persuaded Al Fateh to recruit him less than a year ago, but the gamble has not paid off.

In contrast, Toko-Ekambi’s signing reflects Al Fateh’s intent to strengthen their attack with proven quality.

The 32-year-old forward boasts a record of European competition experience and international pedigree with Cameroon, giving José Gomes an immediate upgrade in firepower and tactical options.

For Sbaï, the decision marks the abrupt end of a chapter that began with promise but fizzled before it could take root.

His removal from the squad highlights the unforgiving nature of top-flight football, where adaptation is critical and time is often short.

While no official transfer agreement has yet been announced, the Moroccan winger’s future now lies away from Al Fateh.
