UEFA Conference League Final: Maresca Calls on Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson to repay teammates

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has moved to dispel any notion of bad blood with Senegal international Nicolas Jackson as the two prepare to meet from opposite dugouts for the first time since the striker’s exit from Stamford Bridge.

Jackson, who spearheaded Chelsea’s attack last season, joined Bayern Munich on loan on transfer deadline day and will line up against his parent club in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash at the Allianz Arena.

The 24-year-old forward completed a £14.2 million temporary switch to the Bundesliga champions, with a conditional obligation for a £56.2 million permanent deal dependent on reaching a high number of appearances.

His departure followed Chelsea’s summer signings of Liam Delap and João Pedro, which pushed him down the pecking order.

The move nearly collapsed when Delap sustained a hamstring injury, leaving Jackson in Munich awaiting clearance, but the clubs ultimately reached agreement to complete the loan.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Maresca underlined that his relationship with Jackson had always been professional and respectful.

“I didn’t have any kind of problem with Nicolas and I don’t have any problem with Nicolas,” the Italian said. “Again, he is a good guy, good professional, works well with us and that’s it.

“I said the other day that I am grateful to Nicolas because if we achieve what we achieved last year, it is because all the players, including Nicolas who was with us.

“I texted him after he left the club, telling him thanks for last season, wishing him all the best. He texted back. Nicolas is a good guy, he was with us, he was working well.”

Wednesday’s encounter now pits Maresca’s Chelsea against a player he insists left with mutual respect, adding extra intrigue to a marquee European tie.
