Al Ahly turns to psychiatry for fresh start

Al Ahly has chosen a new path in its search for revival, turning to mental strength as much as physical training.

The club’s board of directors, led by Mahmoud El-Khatib, has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Ahmed Abu El-Wafa as head of its newly established Psychiatric Unit.

This move comes after Al Ahly decided to part ways with Abu El-Wafa in June following the Club World Cup in the United States. The board later reviewed several candidates before bringing him back in a more central role. A source told Kooora that his return was sealed after his strong credentials and vision for improving player mindset impressed decision makers.

He has already begun work with the squad. “Abu Al-Wafa came to the club and gave a lecture to the team’s players in light of the recent decline in results and performance,” the source explained.

The record champions have endured a difficult start to the season. After five matches, Al Ahly sits in 15th place with only 6 points and a single win. The club now hopes mental resilience can spark a turnaround.
