Mohamed Salah pinpoints Liverpool’s biggest challenge after narrow Burnley win
Mohamed Salah admitted Liverpool are still adapting to changes within the squad after his late penalty secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Egyptian forward struck from the spot in the 95th minute to snatch all three points at Turf Moor, sparing his side from what looked certain to be a frustrating draw.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Salah acknowledged the difficulty Liverpool faced in breaking down a determined Burnley side.
“It was a tough opponent today,” he said. “We did our best to play between the lines, but it was not easy. I’m just glad we managed to win in the end.”
Salah went further, identifying Liverpool’s biggest problem so far this season: the challenge of integrating new signings into the starting line-up.
“We have new players in the XI, and it takes time for them to adapt. It’s up to the rest of us to help them understand our game,” he explained.
His comments reflect the growing pains of a team in transition as Liverpool look to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competition.
Virgil van Dijk, who captained the side in Lancashire, echoed Salah’s assessment of a contest that demanded patience and resilience.
The Dutch defender noted the difficulties of sustaining attacking pressure against Burnley’s defensive structure but praised the team’s perseverance.
“We obviously try to break through teams, but it wasn’t straightforward,” Van Dijk said. “We had to stay patient and keep pushing for the goal.
It was a deserved win, even if conceding a late penalty must have been hard for Burnley.”
Van Dijk also paid tribute to Salah’s composure under pressure, describing his team-mate as a “world-class player” who thrives in decisive moments.
“Mo took it perfectly. We know he can deliver when it matters. Today was one of those games where we could easily have dropped points, but instead we got the win. It’s about staying calm and not getting discouraged, and that’s what we did.”
The win ensures Liverpool keep pace with the early leaders in the Premier League, but it also exposed areas that still require fine-tuning.
With several summer arrivals bedding into Jürgen Klopp’s system, Salah’s remarks underline the importance of building chemistry quickly if the club is to mount a serious challenge for major honours this season.
For Burnley, the manner of defeat was cruel. After holding Liverpool for almost the entire match, Vincent Kompany’s side saw their resistance broken at the very end.
Despite their disappointment, they will take encouragement from a disciplined defensive display against one of the league’s strongest attacking units.
Liverpool now turn their attention to Europe, where they face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League later this week.
The Spanish side, renowned for their defensive organisation, will present another stern examination of Liverpool’s attacking fluency.
Salah’s warning about the need for smoother integration of new players could prove timely as the team prepares for a contest where efficiency and cohesion will be vital.
Sunday’s narrow escape may have raised questions about Liverpool’s cutting edge, but Salah’s decisive intervention once again highlighted his enduring importance.
As the Reds continue to chase success on multiple fronts, their ability to resolve the “big problem” he identified could define their season.
