Swiss-Nigerian ace Manuel Akanji explains Thiago Silva influence in decision to join Inter Milan
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has opened up on his motivations for swapping Manchester City for Inter Milan, citing childhood idols and the lure of Italy’s biggest stage as decisive factors.
The 30-year-old centre-back was officially unveiled this week after completing a season-long loan from City to the Nerazzurri, which includes a conditional obligation to buy at the end of the campaign.
Born in Switzerland to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother, Akanji carries dual heritage and arrives in Serie A with a formidable résumé.
He won multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League under Pep Guardiola, and is expected to inject stability and leadership into Cristian Chivu’s defence as Inter aim to reclaim the Scudetto and mount another deep run in Europe.
Speaking to reporters, Akanji explained the players who shaped his outlook.
“As a child, I liked Raul, the Real Madrid striker, then as a defender I always admired Thiago Silva. I followed him throughout his extraordinary career.
“He played in different leagues and always maintained a high level. So I think he was one of my favourite defenders,” he said.
Asked why he chose Inter, Akanji described the decision as straightforward. “Because it’s one of the best clubs in Europe, nothing could be simpler,” he noted.
“As for the objectives, it’s difficult to talk about them because I’ve only just met my new teammates. I’m not sure what the expectations are, but obviously winning the league, always. When you play for Inter, all of this is normal. And the Champions League too. They came so close, I hope to help them achieve that goal this year.”
